Who was Mario Umana?
Mario Umana was an American judge and politician who was raised in and later worked for the East Boston Community. (Mario Umana’s 2005 Obituary).
Building a school
The school began as the Umana-Barnes, a Vocational-Technical high school, then transitioned to a 6-8 middle school, and finally became a K-8 in 2011. In 2014, the school began its Spanish-English dual language program in Kindergarten. By school year 2022-23, we will be fully dual-language K-8.
In addition to its dual language program, the Mario Umana Academy excels in servicing students with autism, students with educational and social development needs, and students with limited and interrupted formal education (SLIFE).
